Men's Tennis Earns Two Wins In Florida

ORLANDO, FL. - Doug Silverstein recorded three singles wins and one doubles victory to help the Franklin & Marshall men's tennis team open the spring season with a 2-1 record over break in Orlando, Florida.

The Diplomats (2-1) defeated Division II Philadelphia University and Illinois Wesleyan by identical scores of 5-4, while falling to Western New England, 5-4.

F&M won two doubles and three singles to edge Philadelphia for its first win. Noah Bachow and Brett Joseph won 9-8 at No. 2 doubles, while Josh Calo and Paul Salierno recorded the same score at the No. 3 spot for a 2-1 lead.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Armen Vartan won 6-4, 6-1 over Anders Novesky and Silverstein recorded a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision over Kyle Kaltenbacher before Calo tallied the third win 6-3, 6-2 to help F&M defeat the Rams.

Illinois Wesleyan took a 2-1 edge after doubles play, but the Diplomats won four out of the six singles to collect their second win. Bachow and Joseph used an 8-2 decision for the lone doubles point, while each also recorded a singles win. Silverstein picked up his second singles victory of the trip (6-3, 6-2) and Jesus Heath won in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) at the sixth spot.

Against Western New England, Silverstein teamed up with Bachow and Joseph partnered with Heath to earn 8-4 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively. The Golden Bears battled back to win four singles matches to edge F&M, 5-4. Silverstein and Josh McGuinness tallied the lone singles wins for the Diplomats. Silverstein he blanked his final opponent 6-0, 6-0 and McGuinness got his first victory with scores of 6-0, 6-4.

F&M returns to action tomorrow on Wednesday against Haverford. Match time is 3:30 p.m.
