GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's Jay Jackson has been named Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Week for the second time this season, the league office announced today.
Jackson registered a dominating performance in Furman's 17-1 win over Wofford on Friday, starting and pitching eight innings and allowing only four hits, one run, and three walks while striking out six. The victory improved him to SoCon best 8-1 on the season and lowered his season earned run average to 2.72. Jackson's decision keyed the Paladins to a three-game sweep of the Terriers and helped Furman post a 4-1 mark in five contests last week.
In addition to his work on the mound, the former Christ Church Episcopal School star started three games in the outfield and batted .385, going 5-for-13 with two home runs and six RBI. He also scored three times, walked twice, and stole two bases. His three-run home run helped ignite a Paladin comeback in an eventual 6-5, 10-inning triumph over Wofford on Saturday.
The junior right-hander has been tabbed SoCon Pitcher-of-the-Week three times in his career.
Currently 23-14 overall and 9-6 in SoCon play, Furman steps outside league play on Tuesday when it entertains sixth-ranked South Carolina at Fluor Field At The West End in a 7:00 p.m. game. The Paladins downed the Gamecocks, ranked ninth at the time, 4-2 in Columbia on Mar. 25.
