Furman Paladins Fight Against Hunger In The Greenville Area

Feb. 18, 2008

GREENVILLE, S.C., Feb. 18, 2008 - More than 40 Greenville-area hunger relief agencies received some much-needed assistance Monday, thanks to the efforts of Tyson Foods, Inc., Lift Up America, and student-athletes and coaches from Furman University. Furman head coach Bobby Lamb and approximately 12 members of the football team helped a team of 25 volunteers unload a truckload of protein products donated by Tyson Foods today near West End Field. The truck contained more than 30,000 pounds of protein products that were distributed to area hunger relief agencies.

"This event is a great way to show the university's commitment and support for the Greenville community," said Lamb. "Our players are proud to volunteer their time to the Lift Up America program and to help distribute this donation from Tyson Foods that will make such a difference to people in need. Like the many other volunteers who are here today, we are here because Greenville is where we live and work, too."

"Because of the partnership between Tyson Foods and Lift Up America, we have been able to really make a difference in the field of hunger relief all across the country," said Dave Hannah, CEO of Lift Up America.

"We have accomplished a great deal in the four years that Tyson Foods has worked with the Lift Up America program," said John Tyson, chairman of Tyson Foods. "It is a great example of athletes and teams coming together to fight hunger in their communities."

Founded in 2005 with a mission to give back to communities across the country, Lift Up America continues to nurture its vision of providing important necessities to families and instilling hope in the hearts of America's less-fortunate. Lift Up America, fueled by caring corporations and individuals and powered by a humanitarian heart, aims to feed the nation's hungry, while providing hope, hearing and vision screenings, and prescription hearing aids and eyewear to American children in need. Last year, thanks to the generosity of sponsors 15,000 children and families were touched by Lift Up America events with more than $40 million in gifts being distributed throughout the United States and Mexico.

Protein is one of the most efficient and long lasting sources of energy, and unfortunately, is also the commodity that is donated to food banks the least. The chicken donated today is one of the most concentrated sources of protein--an essential nutrient of life. The average person - man, woman or child - needs to eat about four ounces of protein per day.

The donation is part of Tyson's ongoing commitment to lead and support hunger-relief initiatives. Since 2000, the company has donated $3 million and 50 million pounds of chicken, beef and pork products to hunger-relief agencies nationwide.
