Men's Tennis Begins Southern Conference Play with Win

STATESBORO, Ga. - After dropping the doubles point, the Georgia Southern men's tennis team could not gain momentum in singles action as the Eagles fell 6-1 to Furman Sunday afternoon.

Furman jumped off to a 1-0 start claiming the doubles point with victories at the two and three spots. At the number two spot, the team of Andy Juc and Chris Motes topped Matthew Sands and Philip Prins, 8-3, while the Paladin duo of Bo Ladyman and Jason Basile defeated Joris De Weerdt and Gregory Bekkers by a score of 8-5.

In singles play, the Paladins quickly clinched the match with three straight victories at the six, five and three spots. Daniel Knause clinched the match at the three seed in two sets, defeating Gregory Bekkers 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

Georgia Southern dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Furman picked up its first conference victory of the season and improved to 3-8 overall.

The Paladins will take the court again on Friday, March 14, as they take part in the Blue Grey Invitational against some of the top competition in the nation.
