Despite a 10-point lead in the first half, the Lady Paladins were unable to complete a season sweep of Appalachian State. Freshman Sam Ramirez led three Mountaineers in double-digit points with 15 as Appalachian State topped Furman 60-55.
A sloppy beginning to the first half saw the two teams combine for ten total turnovers in the first ten minutes of the game, with neither team leading by more than four points. With the score tied 18-18 at the 4:20 mark, the Lady Paladins went on a 10-0 run to head in to the break with a comfortable 28-18 lead.
The Mountaineers started the second half with a 7-0 run, before sophomore Lee Stephens made a three-pointer at the 17-minute mark to score first for the Lady Paladins. The Mountaineers had another unanswered 8-0 run beginning at the 12-minute mark, and a 10-0 run which ended at the five-minute mark.
Ramirez led the Mountaineers with 15 points, while senior Whitney Tossie added 13 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. Sophomore GiGi Thomas recorded 12 points for Appalachian State.
Furman was led by sophomore Lee Stephens 13 total points, while senior Chrissy Phelps led the team with eight rebounds and also added eight points to the losing effort.
With the loss, the Lady Paladins fell to 8-17 on the season and 3-11 in the Southern Conference, while Appalachian State improves to 6-18 and 3-10 in league play.
Furman will hit the road on Monday as they take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in a 7:00 p.m. game.
