The number 31 South Carolina women's tennis team defeated the Furman Lady Paladins Wednesday in a close-fought match with a final score of 5-2.
The Gamecocks took the doubles point with three straight wins, including a narrow victory in number three doubles with the duo of Mansour/McGavock defeating the team of Preeg/Tomory by a score of 8-7 (7-5). The South Carolina duo actually trailed 6-3 before winning four straight games.
Junior Laura Gioia evened the score with a win in number one singles, topping Ana Marija Zubori 6-4, 6-3, but the next two matches went to South Carolina at number two and number four singles.
Furman fought back with a victory at number three singles from Lauren Osborne, who came back to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The Gamecocks sealed the win with a victory from Miljana Jocic at number five singles.
With the win, South Carolina remains undefeated with a 4-0 record, while Furman falls to 3-3. The Lady Paladins will take the court again with a Feb. 19 match against Winthrop, scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
