Patriots Give Up Two Runs in Ninth to Fall at College of Charleston, 7-6

Feb. 24, 2008

Box Score

The George Mason baseball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth but couldn't hold the lead in the ninth as College of Charleston scored two runs with two outs to beat the Patriots, 7-6. With the loss, Mason will return home 0-3 after dropping two one-run games over the weekend to the Cougars.

Spencer Wiggins was 2 for 5 with two RBI and a steal while Mark Hill was 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Ryan Uphouse, Scott Krieger, Justin Bour and Ryan Soares each had an RBI.

Mason scored first with a pair of runs in the second. Shane Davis walked, Hill singled and after Uphouse's sacrifice bunt, Wiggins hit a two-run single to make it 2-0. The Cougars got the runs back in the bottom of the fourth behind a single, a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly and a single.

Mason retook the lead in the sixth when Wiggins led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Krieger single to center. College of Charleston wasted no time taking its first lead of the game, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth behind three hits and a sacrifice bunt. They added to the lead in the bottom of the seventh, this time on a solo homer by Brandon Sizemore.

The Patriots finally put together a big inning in the eighth. Hill led off with a single and Uphouse followed with an RBI double. Later in the inning, with two outs, Krieger walked and Bour singled to tie the score at 5-5. Soares singled to bring home Krieger and make it 6-5.

With the lead and six outs to go, Mason closer Jordan Flasher entered the game making his first appearance of the season. After getting through the eighth inning unscathed, he had to leave the game with no outs in the ninth after walking the lead off batter. Jason Koziol came on and after allowing a single, a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, he got a strike out of Gabe Marchant to make it two outs. But Jedd Cordisco came through for College of Charleston with a two-run single to win end the game.
