Baseball Drops 4-1 Decision to West Virginia

Conway, S.C. - The George Mason baseball team was unable to put together its first winning streak of the season on Sunday as the Patriots lost to West Virginia in the Baseball on the Beach Tournament, 4-1. After taking a 1-0 lead in the second, Mason saw the Mountaineers scrape out runs in the second and third and two in the fifth to drop Mason to 1-5 on the season.

Mike Modica took the loss for Mason, allowing four runs on 11 hits and two walks in four and one-third innings. Jason Koziol pitched one-hit ball over the final three and two-third innings.

The Patriots got multiple hits from Brent Weiss as he was 2 for 4. Ryan Uphouse scored Mason's only run after hitting a two-out double. Spencer Wiggins followed with an RBI single. Justin Bour and Scott Krieger each had hits as well. Steve Morrison earned the win for West Virginia, allowing five hits and two walks in eight innings while striking out 10. Chris Enourato earned the save. Jedd Gyorko was 3 for 4 with two RBI.

The Patriots will take the field one last time in the Baseball on the Beach Tournament, facing host-school Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
