Baseball Comes Up Short Against No. 26 Coastal Carolina

March 2, 2008

Box Score

The George Mason baseball team managed just two hits in its second game on Sunday afternoon as the Patriots fell at 26th-ranked Coastal Carolina, 6-0 in the Baseball on the Beach Tournament. It was the second time in four games the Patriots were shut out and the two hits were a season low.

Spencer Wiggins and Josh Steinberg had the hits for Mason. Wiggins led off the game with a hit, then he stole a pair of bases before Scott Krieger and Justin Bour struck out. Steinberg's hit came in the eight. He led off the frame with a single and eventually made it to third before Ryan Uphouse struck out to end the inning. Between the first and eighth, the only Mason runner was Bour, who walked in the fourth.

Mason relied on five pitchers. Kris Mengle started and allowed one run in two innings. Darren McLean followed and he gave up four runs in the third. Jack Zeltner allowed one run on three hits in two innings while Trevor Rosenberg pitched two scoreless innings and T.J. O'Grady pitched a scoreless ninth.

Tyler Bortnick was 2 for 3 with three RBI and David Anderson was 1 for 4 with two RBI for Coastal Carolina. Nick McCully allowed one hit and one walk while striking out nine in seven innings.

The Patriots (1-6) will next take the field on Tuesday when they play their home opener, hosting George Washington at 2:30 p.m.
