Baseball Completes Sweep of Hofstra With 10-5 Win

April 13, 2008

Box Score

Hempstead, N.Y. - The George Mason baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Hofstra on Sunday, taking a 9-0 lead and then holding off the Pride over the final three innings. Ryan Brecko picked up his second win of the series while the first four players in the Mason order all had multiple hits.

Ryan Soares was 3 for 6 with three runs, Chris Henderson was 4 for 5 with three RBI, Justin Bour was 3 for 6, Scott Krieger was 2 for 4 and Brent Weiss was 2 for 5 with two RBI. Shane Davis was 1 for 3 with three runs.

Mason (17-18, 11-6) took a two-run lead in the first when Shane Davis led off the inning with a single and Soares hit a two-out homer to make it 2-0. In the fourth, Mason scored three more times. Davis again led off the inning, this time with a walk. Weiss singled but he was replaced on the base paths by Soares, who reached on a fielder's choice. Henderson, Bour and Krieger all singled home runs for a 5-0 lead.

In the fifth, Josh Steinberg and Davis led off with walks and Weiss singled to bring them both home. After a Soares double put the pair in scoring position, Henderson singled to make it 9-0. In the seventh, Hofstra (12-25, 1-17) chipped away at the lead, scoring four times, using an error, a single and a fielder's choice to load the bases and a grand slam made it 9-4.

Mason's final run came in the eighth when Krieger singled and scored on a Steinberg double. Hofstra's final run came in the ninth, again with the leadoff runner reaching on an error, this time scoring on a wild pitch.

Mason will return to action on Tuesday when the Patriots play Georgetown at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. with game time set for 7:30 p.m.
