Walter Masterson, Baseball's Head Coach in 1980 and 1981 Passes Away

April 7, 2008

The George Mason community is saddened by the loss of Walter Masterson, one of only three head baseball coaches in Patriots history. He passed away this past weekend in North Carolina at age 87.

Masterson came to Mason as the pitching coach in 1979 and took over as head coach when Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler retired after that season. He compiled an overall record of 33-43-1 during his two seasons at the helm in 1980 and 1981.

The Philadelphia, Pa. native pitched in the Major Leagues for 14 years with the Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. He was an American League All-Star in 1948 and 1949.
