Former WNBA player Simone Edwards is in her first season as assistant coach at George Mason.

Edwards comes to Mason after a one-year stint as assistant coach at Radford, where she worked primarily with the Highlanders' post players.

The last original member of the Seattle Storm, Edwards retired on May 19, 2006 after six seasons with Storm. She came to Seattle as a free agent in 2000 after spending one season as a developmental player for the New York Liberty. Edwards averaged 7.4 points per game her first two seasons and started 27 games in 2002. She left ranked third in Storm career rebounds with 625 and fourth in points with 936

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Edwards played her collegiate ball at Seminole Junior College (1993-95) and Iowa (1995-97). A Junior College All-American, she was a two-time Most Valuable Player of the Bi-State West Conference and the NCJAA Region II as she averaged 22.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. At Iowa, she averaged 7.1 ppg and led the Hawkeyes in field goal percentage (.557) as a senior.

Edwards also has international playing experience, competing overseas in Israel (1998-03), Italy (2004-05), Spain (2006) and Hungary (2007). Playing for Maccabi Ramat-Hen, she led the Israeli League in scoring, averaging 18.7 points per game for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. Off the court, she is involved with her own charitable organization. She created the Simone4Children foundation which was created to assist economically disadvantaged children in Seattle and Jamaica.

Edwards is a 1997 graduate of the University of Iowa, where she received her degree in sociology.
