Henson Selected For Nike "So You Want To Be A Coach" Program

Feb. 22, 2008

ATLANTA - Senior C'Vette Henson, a member of the George Mason women's basketball team, has been selected as a participant in the 2008 Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Nike "So You Want To Be A Coach" program. The event will be held from April 4-6 in Tampa, Fla., during the WBCA National Convention.

Henson was selected from hundreds of applicants to participate in the event. To be eligible to be selected, a student-athlete must have used her final year of eligibility at a four-year institution or graduated within the past year. Her head coach must be a member of the WBCA and nominate the student-athlete.

"I am thrilled for C'Vette to have the opportunity to represent George Mason University at the WBCA Convention and be a part of the "So You Want to Be a Coach" program," said head coach Debbie Taneyhill. "C'Vette will hear from many great speakers and get a first-hand look at what it takes to get a foot in the door of the coaching profession."

The purpose of the event is to better prepare minority women basketball players in the professional and educational sphere of coaching. The two and half day event, sponsored by Nike, seeks to increase the interest of minority women basketball players to become coaches.

The selected participants will hear from highly touted professionals in the coaching field, and have the opportunity to sit in on NCAA open practices. Upon completion each participant receives a certificate and their resume is uploaded to Athleticlink.com. The site serves as the WBCA Career and Resource website for prospective applicants who desire to work in the field. This is extremely valuable to the participants in obtaining a position as a coach. Of the participants in 2005, 29 of them have garnered collegiate coaching positions.

Henson has seen action in 14 games this season for the Patriots, including a season high 10-point outing against Liberty on Jan. 15, one short of her career high. Henson spent two years at the University of Maryland before transferring to Mason. The Annapolis, Md., native and graduate of Annapolis High School is majoring in social work.
