Softball Splits On Final Day of Patriot Classic

FAIRFAX, Va. - After opening the day with a 10-1 loss to Cornell, the George Mason softball team rebounded with a 5-1 victory over Princeton in the final day of the 2008 Patriot Classic, held at George Mason Field. Mason finished the day with a 2-7 record after splitting its game against the two Ivy League opponents.

In the first game, freshman Ashli Breau continued her impressive home debut weekend with a 2-for-2 performance against the Big Red. Mason, which was held to a three-hit day by Jenn Meunier, saw its other hit off the bat of sophomore Shaniqua Steele. Mason struck first in the second inning when senior Lesley Hassen's RBI sacrifice fly put the Patriots ahead 1-0. However, Cornell took the lead for good with a three-run third inning and added seven more in the final two innings to polish off the victory. The Big Red offense was powered by a five-RBI day from Jenna Campagnolo, who blasted a pair of home runs. Junior Kelsey Mack was tagged with the loss for Mason.

The final game of the tournament pitted Mason against Princeton. Much like the earlier game, Mason scored the game's first run when Mack blasted a solo shot to left field. However, the Patriots used a four-run fifth inning to take its largest lead of the 2008 season. Mason's offense as led by two-hit games from Steele and sophomore Ciera Jones. Jones also added two RBI to her season total in the fifth when she singled through the right side.

Sophomore Becky Anderson improved to 2-2 after pitching a complete game, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five Tigers. For Princeton, Kristen Schaus (1-2) took the loss after allowing Mason's first run.
 

 

Mason will be back in action on Tuesday at home when the Patriots will face Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader set to begin at 2 p.m.
