Drexel Takes Series Victory With 7-0 Win Over Softball

March 30, 2008

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - After splitting a doubleheader yesterday, the George Mason softball team fell to Drexel, 7-0, in Colonial Athletic Association action on Sunday. Drexel improved to 16-8 and 5-1 in the CAA, while the Patriots fell to 8-22, 2-4 in conference play.

Dragons starter Katrina Gaudier allowed just one hit in five innings of work, as she picked up the victory. Her counterpart, Mason sophomore Becky Anderson, was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) in three innings of work.

Mason's offense totaled just three hits in the game, as junior Alison Bryan and sophomores Ciera Jones and Ashli Breau each tallied a hit. Jones represented the lone extra-base hit for the Patriots when she doubled in the sixth inning. Drexel was led by a 3-for-4, four-RBI day from Ashley Botelho.

Botelho kicked off the day's scoring in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI double to left field. She was followed by a Molly Dacey RBI single which put the Dragons ahead 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Dragons padded their lead with four runs. Another Botelho RBI single, as well as a two-run home run by Sandi Wambold and a Lisa Williams run-scoring single gave Drexel a 6-0 lead. Gaudier loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning on three consecutive walks, but induced a groundout to escape with no runs scored.

The final run of the game was scored in the fourth inning, when Botelho added her third RBI base hit on the day. Mason would load the bases once more in the top of the seventh, but again, the Dragons ended the inning unscathed and came away with the series victory.

Mason opens a five-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts Coppin State for a doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m.
