Softball Pounds Coppin State, 27-0 and 27-1, In Midweek Doubleheader

April 2, 2008

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

FAIRFAX, Va. - Using an offensive explosion that ranks among the largest in program history, the George Mason softball team downed the Coppin State Eagles, 27-0 and 27-1, in doubleheader action on Wednesday. Mason improved to 10-21, while the Eagles (0-19) were denied their first victory of the 2008 season.

Mason combined for 54 runs on the day, as all but one Patriot recorded a hit. In the first game, Mason was powered by a 3-for-4, six-RBI performance by sophomore Ashli Breau, who opened the scoring barrage with a line-drive grand slam to left center field in the first inning. Three other Patriots recorded multiple hits in the contest, including junior Alison Bryan who chipped in three RBIs as well.

CSU managed just three hits off of Mason pitching in the game, as sophomore starter Becky Anderson (8-9) tossed three scoreless innings to pick up the win. Junior Paige Miller pitched the final two innings and allowed just two hits. Nichae Alston pitched two complete games for the Eagles and was tagged with both losses. Mason also recorded one of its biggest innings in school history, tallying 16 runs in the bottom of the fourth.

After the day's opening game was called due to the run rule in the middle of the fifth, the two teams retook the field moments later for the second half of the twin-bill. Again, the Patriots scored early and often as they took a 6-0 lead in the first.

Breau, along with senior Kristin Dickel and junior Sarah Martin, each chipped in three hits in the game. Dickel led all Patriots with four RBIs, while Breau and junior Vickie Brill each drove in three runs. Junior Paige Krystofinski (1-4) earned her first victory of the season after tossing four innings.

Coppin State scored its lone run of the day in the top of the third inning when Coralys del Mar Rivera singled to center, scoring Willis. The Patriots countered with two runs in the bottom half, on Breau's second home run of the day and a RBI sacrifice fly by senior Lesley Hassen. Mason added 14 runs in the fourth inning to match their run total of the previous game.

The Patriots will look to keep the offense rolling into the weekend as they host Georgia State in a Colonial Athletic Association showdown, set to begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m.
