Sims, Marcelle Lead Way for Tech Track & Field at Auburn Meet

AUBURN, Ala. - The Georgia Tech track & field teams had to battle some rough weather for the second straight week but were able to complete a full day of competition at the Tiger Track Classic Saturday at the Hutsell-Rosen Track on the Auburn University Campus.

Jenny Sims, a senior from Woodstock, Ga., placed first in the women's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:32.07. In the 800-meter run, freshman Amanda Montgomery placed second with a time of 2:15.51. Sims finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:16.66 and freshman Corey Aitken crossed the line eighth with a time of 2:23.29.

In the women's 100-meter hurdles, senior Shantia Moss crossed the line first with a season-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.19. Moss also finished ninth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.35. Freshman Leslie Njoku finished second in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 59.72.

Junior Kimery Hern placed first in the hammer throw with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 187 feet, 7 inches. Freshman Erica Penk finished sixth in the pole vault after clearing a height of 11 feet, 7 ¾ inches.

Freshman Jenae Anderson finished the 100-meter dash in 10th place with a time of 12.08.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 45.73, just .03 seconds off a Regional qualifying mark. The 4x400-meter relay team placed third with a time of 3:48.16.

The men's squad was led by freshman Alphonso Jordan, who placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 23 feet, 10 inches. Senior James Lemons II finished sixth with a mark of 23 feet, 5 ¼ inches.

 

 

Lemons placed second in the triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 50 feet, 5 ¼ inches. Jordan landed in third place after finishing with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 50 feet, 2 ½ inches. Freshman Omar Morrison placed ninth in the event with a mark of 46 feet, 3 ½ inches.

In the men's shot put, sophomore Steve Marcelle placed second after registering an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 59 feet, 1 ½ inches. Junior Andy Powlen produced an eighth-place finish with a mark of 54 feet, 10 inches.

Marcelle also placed third in the discus with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 178 feet, 8 inches.

Senior David Herren finished the men's 1500m run eighth with a time of 3:54.16. In the 3000-meter steeplechase, senior Cristan Duvall placed fourth with a time of 9:33.22. Sophomore Mohamed Himedan finished the steeplechase in seventh place with a time of 10:00.39.

Earlier in the day, Jordan crossed the line 10th in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.58.

The Jackets will now take a week off as they prepare to host the 2007 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at George C. Griffin Track from April 17-19.
