PHILADELPHIA - Kimery Hern placed second in the women's hammer throw championships to lead the Georgia Tech men's and women's track & field teams on the first day of the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, Pa.

Hern placed second in the hammer throw with a new school record and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 197 feet, 11 inches. Junior Alana Clooten finished in sixth place with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 182 feet, 3 inches.

Freshman Leslie Njoku crossed the line third out of 47 competitors in the women's 400-meter hurdles Championship with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 1:00.27.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team finished 19th out of 85 teams with a time of 45.97. The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Kayla McKeirnan, Amanda Montgomery, Tiffany Grant and Njoku placed 45th with a time of 3:50.73.

Senior Jenny Sims placed third in the women's 3000-meter Championship run with a time of 9:43.46. Senior Nisha Kurian finished the women's Olympic Development 5,000-meter run in a time of 18:59.08 for a 34th-place finish.

In the men's Olympic Development 5,000-meter run, senior David Herren placed 23rd with a time of 14:54.70.
