Baseball Hangs On for Win over USC Upstate, 6-5

SPARTANBURG, SC - George Washington baseball jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and then hung on for the 6-5 victory over host-school USC Upstate Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic at Harley Park in Spartanburg, SC. In the three-day, four-team tournament (NJIT and UT Martin being the other two), GW was the only team to win all three of their games.
The win improved the Colonials record to 3-0 this season, marking the first time they have started a season with three straight wins since 1993, when they began 5-0. Dating back to the end of last season, GW now has a nine-game winning streak.
Sophomore pitcher Justin Dignelli made his first collegiate start after red-shirting one season and missing last year with an injury. He allowed just one hit and one run as he struck out four in four innings of work. Sophomore Bobby Lucas (1-0) picked up the win in relief. The lefthander tallied four punch-outs in his four innings.
Junior Jimmy Duggan pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his first career save, as he struck out the three batters he faced.
Offensively, the Colonials pounded out 11 hits, the third straight game with double-digits in the hits category. Matt Boyd led the way, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and Charlie Kruer, Tom Zebroski and Curtis Eward each added two hits a piece.
OF Kruer and second baseman Tom Zebroski were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with freshman shortstop Sean Rockey and pitcher Pat Lehman. Kruer was also selected as the Tournament MVP.

Kruer, Zebroski and Rockey combined to go 17-for-43 with 14 RBI and seven doubles in the three games. As a team, the Colonials hit .342 as they tallied 38 hits in the tournament.
George Washington will make their home debut this weekend when they host Yale in a three-game non-conference series. The series will start with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 1, with the first game at 12:00 p.m. The series concludes with a single game on Sunday, at 12:00 p.m.
