April 6, 2008
ARLINGTON, VA - For the second day in a row, Massachusetts pitching held the George Washington bats in check, as Nick Serino and Mitchell Eilenberg shutout the Colonials to lead the Minutemen to a 4-0 victory in the rubber-game of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference Series on a cold and damp Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. With the win, UMass (8-11, 3-6 A-10) earned their first A-10 series victory of the season. It was the first conference series loss for GW (16-13, 5-4 A-10) since they were swept at Rhode Island in 2007 (May 4-6).
GW starter Pat Lehman (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) pitched a complete game and struck out eight batters in the defeat. It was the first time that the Colonials have lost in Lehman's (4-1) six starts this season. The junior faced the minimum three batters in seven of his nine innings pitched.
Lehman set down the first nine batters of the game in order, before UMass put a pair of runs together in the top of the fourth inning. Brian Baudinet led-off the frame with a solo home run to leftfield, his fifth of the season. Three batters later, Jim Macdonald hit an RBI-single into right to give the Minutemen the 2-0 lead.
UMass went three-up, three-down in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but managed to add two more runs in the top the ninth. Lehman got the first two batters of the inning, before surrendering a two-run double to Bryan Garrity that extended the UMass lead, 4-0. A fly out to right field ended the threat of any further damage.
Lehman ended his day with four runs allowed on five hits with eight strikeouts and just one walk in nine innings pitched. He leads the team with 42 strikeouts and a 4.44 ERA this season.
UMass starter Nick Serino (2-1) recorded the win with 6.1 innings of five-hit, shutout ball, picking up seven strikeouts along the way. Mitchell Eilenberg threw the last 2.2 innings and did not allow a hit for his first save of the season. Together, they allowed just one GW base runner to reach third base all game.
