Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, VA - George Washington baseball took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but then was shutout the rest of the way as it fell at William & Mary, 16-1, Wednesday night at Plumeri park in Williamsburg, VA. The Tribe pounded out 14 hits and was led by Mike Sheridan, who was 3-for-3, and Greg Maliniak, who had five RBI.
To lead-off the game, in the top of the first, sophomore IF Bryan Hwang (Cliffside Park, NJ/Northern Valley Regional at Old Tappan) singled through the right side, and then advanced to third on a Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Brige) single to left center. Sophomore Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, Va/Oakton) followed and reached on a fielder's choice that scored Hwang to give GW the early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, that would be the last run the Colonials would score Wednesday night.
After the top of the first, GW (16-15) was out-scored 15-0, and out-hit, 14-1. W&M (21-11) scored four runs in the bottom of the first frame, pushed across another run in the third, added four more fifth and then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Tribe scored their first four runs on a grand slam, hit by Greg Maliniak. W&M took advantage of two GW errors and 10 walks issued by Colonial pitching.
Sophomore Chris Davis (Richmond, B.C./Burnett Secondary) suffered his second loss of the season (0-2) after starting the game and allowing four runs in one inning pitched. Cody Winslow earned the win for the home team, after he allowed one run on three hits in five innings pitched. Four different W&M pitchers combined to pitch a hitless final four innings.
