May 10, 2008

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, PA - George Washington baseball lost both games in a key Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader at La Salle as the teams opened their three-game series Saturday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field in Philadelphia, PA.

In game one, GW scored nine unanswered runs, including six in the top of the ninth, but fell just short as La Salle held on, 14-13. In the nightcap, the Explorers took control late with four runs in the seventh and went on to win, 12-5. In the two games, the teams combined for 44 runs on 59 hits. Sophomore Curtis Eward (Oakton, VA/Oakton) was 6-for-8 with two doubles on the day.

In Saturday's opening game, La Salle jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and was ahead 10-1 after six innings before GW began its comeback attempt. The Colonials scored three in the top of the seventh inning, plating two on Sean Rockey's (Sammamish, WA/Eastlake/Columbia Basin CC) single to left. After the Explorers plated four in the bottom of the frame, the Colonials answered with three in the eighth. In the top of the ninth, GW scored six runs to pull within one, and had the tying run on second base, but a strikeout ended the threat.

GW starter Pat Lehman (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) was tagged the loss after surrendering nine runs, eight earned, in five innings. Freshman Brendon Kelliher (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs and Curtis Eward was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI.

In the second game, La Salle again jumped out to an early lead, 5-1 after four innings of action, and controlled the rest of the way, winning 12-5. Kelliher and Eward each had a pair of hits. Junior Chris Neary (Phoenix, AZ/Scottsdale CC) suffered the loss, allowing six runs in 5.1 innings.

George Washington and La Salle will finish their series Sunday, at 4:00 p.m.
