Men's Tennis Beats St. Bonaventure, Advances to A-10 Championship Match

MONROEVILLE, PA - George Washington, the number one seed in the 2008 Men's Tennis Atlantic 10 Championship, defeated No. 5 St. Bonaventure Saturday in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. The Colonials will face Xavier, the No. 2 seed, for the A-10 title, Sunday, at 11:00 a.m., at Club 4 Life in Monroeville, PA.

The Colonials defeated the Bonnies, 4-1, in the first semifinal of the afternoon on Saturday, while Xavier downed No. 3 Charlotte, 4-0, for a spot in the final. It marks the seventh time in eight years that the first and second seeds will meet in the championship match.

In Saturday's semifinal match against St. Bonaventure, GW claimed the doubles point to begin the match, getting 8-6 and 8-3 victories at flight two and three doubles, respectively. In singles play, the Colonials won the match with three victories, including a 6-4, 6-1 win from No. 1 player Mustafa Gencsoy. Senior Sam Salyer and freshman Erik Hannah were double-winners for the Colonials, with Salyer taking his third flight match, 7-6(4), 6-2 and Hannah winning, 6-2, 6-2 from the fourth flight.

GW returns to the championship match for the first time since 2004, where it fell to Richmond, 4-1. The Colonials were champions in 1979, and have appeared in the deciding match a total of seven other times (1993-96, 1999, 2002 and 2004).

 

 

In other tournament action, Charlotte and St. Bonaventure are slated to square off in the third-place match on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
