Sam Salyer, Caitlin Garman Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington men's tennis senior Sam Salyer (Minneapolis, MN/St. Paul Academy) and women's lacrosse senior Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School of Baltimore) were named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District II First Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

Salyer, who was named the 2008 Atlantic-10 Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year, becomes the first GW men's tennis player to earn first team accolades in the program's history.

An American studies major, Salyer was also selected to both the A-10 All-Conference second-team and the A-10 Academic All-Conference team. The native of Minneapolis, MN, finished the 2007-08 season with a 17-13 overall singles mark, which included three doubles wins and one singles victory from the third flight in the A-10 Championship. He won 11 of his final 17 matches of the season. Salyer's inclusion on the Academic All-Conference team marks the third straight year that he has earned that honor. who was named the 2008 Atlantic-10 Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year.

Garmin, a goalie, finished 2008 third in the A-10 with a .464 save percentage and was fourth with 149 saves. The communications major was 24th in the nation with 9.3 save per game, and ended her GW career as the school's career saves leader, with 493. Garmin, who was a 2007 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II Second Team selection, has been a three-time A-10 All-Academic Team pick (2006-08) and was named to the league's Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester of her career. Garmin was also the reipient of GW's 2008 SAAC Sr. Female Athlete Academic Award.

Salyer and Garmin join other first team recipients from eight districts on the national Academic All-America ballot. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. CoSIDA District II is comprised of Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
