In the last meeting, then No. 8/9 GW had its 18-game winning streak snapped by SJU, 57-55, in the semifinals of the A-10 Championship in Cincinnati, OH. The Colonials entered that game 26-2 overall and winner of all 15 of its games against A-10 opponents, including a quarterfinal victory over Dayton. The Hawks rallied from a 13-point deficit over the final five minutes to knock off the top-seeded Colonials. Jessica Adair had a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double, but fouled out with 34 seconds to play. Kimberly Beck also scored 15 points.
GW trails Saint Joseph's in the all-time series, 25-22. The Hawks are the only A-10 program to hold a lead in the head-to-head series against the Colonials. However, GW clings to a slim 11-10 edge in all-time meetings at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. 11 of the 21 meetings at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse have been decided by eight points or less, including the last three and five of the last six encounters.
GW ran its home winning streak to 12 straight games with an 82-58 rout of Saint Louis Wednesday. Trailing 12-10 just over five minutes into the game, the Colonials ended the first half on a 42-14 run to double-up the Billikens, 52-26, at halftime. Senior Whitney Allen went for a career-high 17 points, while senior backcourt duo Sarah-Jo Lawrence (19) and Beck (23) combined for 42 points.
GW head coach Joe McKeown is 46-16 all-time in his hometown of Philadelphia in 18-plus seasons at GW, including an 11-10 mark against the Hawks and 13-7 record in A-10 Championship play at various venues throughout the city.
GW is currently in a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 with Temple and Xavier with a 9-2 league record. The Owls hold the edge in the race for the A-10 Championship's coveted No. 1 seed by virtue of their victory over the Colonials on Jan. 19. GW has won at least a share of six straight conference regular-season crowns, including West Division titles each year from 2002-05.
Saint Joseph's has lost two of its last three following Wednesday night's 63-60 loss to Temple at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The Hawks led by six with 2:43 remaining, but the Owls' Ashley Morris netted eight points over the next 85 seconds for a two-point lead, 62-60. Temple's Lady Comfort hit a free throw with three seconds left for a 63-60 lead and Saint Joseph's failed to get a clean shot attempt as time expired.
Senior Timisha Gomez, the Hawks' second leading scorer at 10.9 ppg, has scored a career-high 21 points in each of the last two games. Freshman leading scorer Sarah Acker (12.3 ppg) was held to just two points on 1-of-5 shooting against the Owls. Acker, who also paces the Hawks in shooting (60.3 percent) and rebounding (8.7 rpg) has been named A-10 Rookie of the Week four times this season.
