STANFORD, CA - No. 20/16 George Washington battles No. 10/8 California in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament at Maples Pavilion Monday at 8:00 pm ET. The first-ever meeting between the Colonials and Golden Bears will air live on ESPN2.
No. 20/16 GW (26-6) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season with a 66-56 win over Auburn Saturday. Four players reached double-figures as the Colonials overcame a seven-point second half deficit and just one field goal from All-America candidate Kimberly Beck. Whitney Allen, Jessica Adair and Sarah-Jo Lawrence scored 20 of GW's last 22 points, while Allen held AU's leading scorer DeWanna Bonner scoreless the final 13 minutes.
GW has never played California. However, the Colonials have been outstanding in the state of California as of late, winning each of their last five games in the Golden State. Before Saturday's win over Auburn, GW won the Surf `n Slam Classic last season with wins over host San Diego State and No. 11/10 Georgia, then advanced to the program's third-ever NCAA Sweet 16 with victories over Boise State and Texas A&M in Los Angeles.
GW is 7-3 all-time against current Pac-10 programs, most recently a 69-65 victory over Arizona in the BTI Classic in College Park, MD, in Nov. 2006.
Even though GW has never faced Cal, the teams' head coaches are no stranger to each other on the sidelines. GW head coach Joe McKeown faced Cal's Joanne Boyle seven times when Boyle was head coach at Richmond, the Colonials' nearby Atlantic 10 rival, from 2002-05. Despite enjoying unprecedented success with the Spiders (three postseason appearances), Boyle was unable to defeat McKeown and the Colonials in seven tries. After a close six-point battle at Richmond in the coaches' first meeting in Jan. 2003, GW beat Boyle and UR by double-figures in six straight games, including a 63-44 victory in a 2005 A-10 Championship semifinal matchup which preceded Boyle's hiring at Cal. In total, GW and McKeown won all seven meetings against UR and Boyle by an average of 16 points.
No. 10/8 Cal (27-6) won its second-ever NCAA Tournament game, first since 1993, 77-60 over San Diego Saturday. Frontcourt duo Ashley Walker (21 points) and Devanei Hampton (22) combined for 43 points to lead the Golden Bears past the 14th-seeded Toreros. With 27 victories, Cal is enjoying its best season in program history.
