Sarah-Jo Lawrence Chosen to Lowe's Senior CLASS Award All-America Second Team

April 6, 2008

TAMPA, FL - George Washington senior guard Sarah-Jo Lawrence was named to the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award All-America Second Team Saturday. The award recognizes the most outstanding senior student-athletes in Division I women's basketball.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award has grown into the nation's premier tribute to college seniors. The award identifies personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete, with criteria including excellence in the classroom, character and community, as well as performance on the court.

Lawrence, the 2008 Atlantic 10 Conference Student-Athlete of the Year, was one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, which was given to Stanford's Candice Wiggins Saturday. Lawrence was placed on the second team with Princeton's Meagan Cowher, Kentucky's Sarah Elliott, Georgia's Tasha Humphrey and Carlene Hightower of A-10 rival La Salle. The individual award and All-Senior All-America Teams were chosen based on the cumulative results of NCAA Division I coaches, national media and fan balloting.

Lawrence ranks 13th all-time at GW in scoring with 1,373 points and is 16th with 311 assists. Lawrence played in all 130 games during her career, tying the school record, and averaged 12.3 points in 10 NCAA Tournament games. She was named the A-10's Sixth Player of the Year in 2006 and was an All-Conference honoree in each of the last three seasons.

Off the court, Lawrence carries a 3.85 grade-point average as a communication and sociology major and was chosen a Third Team Academic All-American by CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine in February.

The communications and sociology major has twice been named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar, is a six-time Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient and was named to the 2007 Division I-AAA Athletic Directors' Scholar-Athlete Team. Off the court and outside the classroom, Lawrence is active in a number of on-campus organizations including Athletes in Action, Student-Athlete Advisory Council and the Jackie Robinson Society. She has also participated in volunteer events such as Adopt-A-Family, March for Darfur and Walk Now! To Cure Autism.

Lawrence, along with classmates Whitney Allen, Kimberly Beck and Lora Mitchell, guided the Colonials to 101 victories, four A-10 regular-season titles, four NCAA Tournaments and a pair of Sweet 16 appearances during their careers.
