March 17, 2008

Final Stats

MORAGA, CA - Senior Hayley McDonough (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) and sophomore Mia Breheny (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) combined for 10 goals and the George Washington women's lacrosse team won its second straight game with a 21-10 thrashing of Saint Mary's (CA) Monday.

GW's (2-5) 21 goals were the second-most scored in a single-game in program history, trailing only the 25 scored against Howard on March 26, 2004. The Colonials took a program-record 51 shots against the Gaels and matched the program mark with 21 draw controls.

GW led 4-0 just over five minutes into the game, but Saint Mary's (0-9) countered with four consecutive goals to tie the score 4-4 with 15:03 left in the first half. McDonough netted three goals during a 7-2 run spanning the first and second halves to help the Colonials jump ahead 11-6 with 29:44 remaining.

The Gaels' Dana Elfvin scored to cut the lead to four goals, 11-7, but that's as close as they would get. Breheny added three goals in a 7-0 spurt to boost the Colonials to an 18-7 advantage at the 16:52 mark. The two teams' traded goals over the final 15 minutes for the 21-10 final.

McDonough finished with a career-high five goals, while Breheny equaled her career-best with five tallies and added an assist. Senior Laura Wunk (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) matched Breheny with six points on two goals and four assists. In total, 12 players recorded at least one point for GW, with nine players scoring goals and seven players registering multi-point games.

Senior Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School) wasn't forced to make a save in the first half to earn her second win. Freshmen Elizabeth Hoffman (Owings Mills, MD/Beth Tfiloh) and Christine Lovett (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) combined for 6 saves in the second half.

Junior Katie Lilly (Riva, MD/South River) paced GW with four ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Wunk, McDonough and Breheny each won a team-high three draws.

GW concludes its West Coast trip with a visit to California Wednesday at 6:30 pm ET.
