Karcsh's Late Goal Sends Women's Lacrosse to Upset of Richmond, 11-10

WASHINGTON, DC - Senior Kristin Karcsh scored the game-winning goal with 19.1 seconds remaining to lift the George Washington women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 upset over previous Atlantic 10 unbeaten Richmond at Mount Vernon Field Wednesday afternoon.
Karcsh, who netted a team-high four goals on the day, capped off a five-minute final possession by beating her defender one-on-one and firing a shot over the right shoulder of Richmond goalkeeper Erica Marrocco for the go-ahead goal. Sophomore Mia Breheny won the ensuing draw control and dished off to Karcsh, who sprinted past Spiders' defenders to run out the clock.
GW improved to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic 10 play with the victory. The Colonials wrap the 2008 season at Saint Joseph's this Friday, April 18, at 4:00 pm. Richmond dropped to 8-8 overall and 5-1 in the A-10.
The upset victory is GW's first over Richmond since 2005, a span of three games, which included a loss to the Spiders in last year's A-10 Championship title game. The Colonials are 3-5 all-time against their league rival.
The back-and-forth affair featured five ties and six lead changes as GW rallied from a four-goal first-half deficit. Richmond's Jenna Hubbard struck first nearly three minutes, but senior Hayley McDonough, sophomore Taylor Donohue and Karcsh tallied three unanswered goals to the give the Colonials a 3-1 lead at the 22:29 mark.
Richmond exploded with six consecutive goals, the last four scored by Allison Furstenburg, to take its largest lead at 7-3 with just over nine minutes left in the first half.
GW rallied with four goals to close out the period - a pair from Breheny and one each from Donohue and Karcsh - to knot the score at 7-7 at the break.

Karcsh started the second half with her 30th goal of the season to push the Colonials ahead, 8-7, with 21:18 to play. Furstenburg answered 56 seconds later to draw the Spiders even, but GW's Katie Lilly finished a pass from senior Laura Wunk at the 19:34 mark and Wunk scored unassisted over 10 minutes later for a two-goal advantage with 9:10 left.
The Spiders' duo of Furstenburg and Mandy Friend hooked up for consecutive goals at the 7:30 and 5:57 marks to tie the game for the final time at 10-10. Furstenburg finished with six goals and an assist, while Friend added two goals and three assists.
GW won the next draw, but turned the ball over to UR. The Spiders' Claire Cunniff lost possession on the subsequent attack and Lilly picked up the ground ball to set up the Colonials' final possession.
Donohue and Breheny each had two goals and Wunk chipped in a goal and two assists. Lilly won four of GW's 11 ground balls, while Breheny and junior Alaska Burr won three draws apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman posted a solid performance in her final home game with 13 saves.
