April 18, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington women's rowing team will compete in The 13th Annual Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, NJ, on Saturday, Apr. 19.

The Colonials are looking to improve on last season's sixth place finish after winning the Varsity 8 in 2006.

The GW women are coming off a fourth place finish at its 21st GW Invitational Regatta last weekend. The Colonials defeated George Mason in the Women's 2nd Varsity Eight on Friday but the Varsity Eight was defeated by Iowa by 21 seconds.

Massachusetts has won each of the previous 12 team titles - the longest Championship winning streak in any A-10 sport in league history. Last year, the Minutewomen won the quad event in the second-fastest time in Conference annals at 7:59.40.

Rhode Island finished second in last year's Championship in what marked the closest finish in Conference history, falling to UMass by just a single point in team scoring, 45-44. With victories in the Varsity 8, Varsity 4, second Varsity 8 and Novice 8, the Rams won the most events at last year's championship. Dayton took the Lightweight 8, while Duquesne captured the Lighweight 4 and Novice 4.

The Championship begins at 8:00am with trials on Saturday on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. Finals will commence at approximately 11:50am.

Competing in this year's Atlantic 10 Championship with the Colonials are Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's and Temple.
