CHAPEL HILL, NC - The George Washington University softball team pounded out a program-record 22 runs, on a school record 20 hits in its 22-1 win over N.C. Central Saturday afternoon at the Carolina Classic. Seven Colonials recorded multi-hit games, while four connected for three hits apiece.
GW did not score in the first, but erupted for a Colonials record, 14 runs in the bottom of the second. Senior Katie Miller and sophomore Amanda Holst reached base to lead off the inning, and senior Jackie Yaniga drove both of them in with a double to left. Junior Carrie Higdon then singled, advancing Yaniga to third. Redshirt sophomore Elisa Van Kirk provided even more damage with a three run homer to left center, making the score 6-0. The very next batter, sophomore Amanda Gabriel, also clobbered a pitch over the fence for her first career home run. Freshman Katie Terrazas, Holst, Higdon, and junior Tori Sensi also recorded RBIs in the inning as GW sent 19 batters to the plate in the frame. Miller got up to bat three times in the inning.
Seven runs were added by GW in the third as Van Kirk, Terrazas and Miller all produced run scoring plays to make the score 21-0.
Senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis doubled in another run in the fourth to extend the lead to 22-0.
The Eagles got a run on the board in the top of the fifth for their only run on the day.
