April 4, 2008
WASHINGTON, DC - A leadoff home run by Chrysanthi Halkiotis scored the lone run by the George Washington softball team in a Friday afternoon doubleheader against Atlantic 10 powerhouse, Massachusetts. The Colonials were no-hit by UMass junior Brandice Balschmiter in game one, 8-0, and fell in the nightcap, 10-1.
Down 3-1 in the bottom half of the first, Halkiotis took UMass starter, Bailey Sanders deep to right field for her third home run of the season. Redshirt sophomore Elisa Van Kirk just missed a home run later in the game, but was robbed by the left fielder who leaped and brought the ball back in play for the out. Sophomore Amanda Holst was the only other Colonial to record a base hit on the day, while juniors Tori Sensi and Carrie Higdon reached base via a free pass.
Sophomore hurler Amanda Gabriel (4-10) received the loss in the opener, allowing seven earned runs on ten hits. Gabriel also fanned eight and walked just one. Unfortunately she was bested by Balschmiter who struck out 13 in the perfect game.
Gabriel also pitched in relief in game two, allowing just two earned runs in 3.2 innings of work, while striking out two. Higdon started the nightcap for GW and allowed five earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
The Colonials pitchers were not helped by its defense, which made seven errors on the day.
Massachusetts has now won 26 straight conference games dating back to 2006, and ten straight games this season.
