EMMITSBURG, MD - The George Washington softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Mount St. Mary's Thursday afternoon at the MSM Softball Complex. The Colonials dropped a nailbiter in the opener, 2-1, and were run-ruled in the second game, 11-2.
The Mountaineers took a 2-0 lead with a run in the second and third innings off GW right-hander Amanda Gabriel. The score remained that way until senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis cut the lead in half with a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, her fourth blast of the season.
GW put two more runners on base in the sixth but were unable to drive them in.
The Colonials had a chance to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Gabriel was plunked by Mount pitcher Jamie Fowler with two-outs. Halkiotis almost took Fowler's head off with a lined shot up the middle for a single. However Fowler was able to escape as junior Carrie Higdon hit a grounder to short, who threw to third for the game-ending force out.
Gabriel received the loss and fell to 7-13 despite giving up just two earned runs in five innings of work. The native of Fullerton, CA allowed just five hits and struck out five and did not walk a batter. Senior Katie Miller pitched a scoreless sixth inning for GW.
The second game did not go much better as the Mountaineers sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring eight runs on eight hits off Higdon, and freshman reliever Ali Pardo.
The Mount would add two more in the second and one in the third to take an 11-0 lead until GW finally got on the board with a solo home run by junior Tori Sensi in the fourth, her second homer of the season.
With two outs in the fifth, the Colonials rallied for a run but were not able to escape the eight-run mercy rule. Gabriel started the rally with a double to right center, and was replaced by senior Caroline Howe, who was making her season debut. A second-straight double by Halkiotis scored Howe from second. With that RBI double by Halkiotis, she set the GW single-season record with 15 doubles in a season. Former Colonial Elana Meyers slapped 14 doubles in 2007.
Higdon received the loss in game two allowing eight earned runs without recording an out. Pardo gave up just one earned run in 4.0 innings of work.
Halkiotis went 4-7 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs to pace GW offensively in the twinbill. The nation's leader in doubles extended her hitting streak to nine games for the second time this season with back-to-back multi-hit games. Sensi was the only other Colonial to record multiple hit in the doubleheader. Gabriel, seniors Katie Miller and Jackie Yaniga and freshman Katie Terrazas also recorded base-hits.
GW (8-21, 4-6 Atlantic 10) host A-10 rival Charlotte Friday, April 18 at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex at 3:00 pm. The same two teams will meet Saturday, April 19 at the Vern in a 12:00 pm start.
