Softball Ranks In Top Ten Nationally in Home Runs and Slugging

WASHINGTON, DC - Trough games on March 23, 2008, the George Washington University softball team ranks in the top ten nationally in both Home Runs Per Game and Slugging Percentage. GW currently stands sixth in the country with 1.2 Home Runs Per Game and ninth with a .515 Slugging Percentage.

Three Colonials place in the NCAA rankings for Home Runs Per Game as redshirt-sophomore Elisa Van Kirk and sophomore pitcher/outfielder Amanda Gabriel rank 15th in the nation with .33 Home Runs Per Game (5 total). Van Kirk also ranks 30th in the country with 1.0 Runs Batted In Per Game (15 total). Senior Katie Miller ranks 41st in the country with .27 Home Runs Per Game (4 total).

As a team, the Colonials also rank 15th in the nation in batting average (.316) and 19th in Doubles Per Game (1.6).

Senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis is also up among the nations best in Doubles Per Game, ranking seventh in the country with .47 per game.

Gabriel, the sophomore right-hander who pitched 17.1 innings in a doubleheader at Saint Louis last Saturday, leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks among the nations best in Strikeouts Per Seven Innings with 7.6.

The Colonials (5-10, 1-3 A-10) face cross-town rival Georgetown later today at the Hoyas' Guy Mason Field in a 4:00 pm doubleheader. The twinbill features GW head coach Kim Staehle and Georgetown head coach Pat Conlan. Both Staehle and Conlan were key members on the University of Connecticut 1993 College World Series team. Staehle also assisted Conlan at Georgetown in 2006, the Hoyas first season as a varsity program before Staehle came to Foggy Bottom in 2007.
