Women's Water Polo Drops League Opener to Maryland, 9-3

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's water polo team, in its first game at Charles E. Smith Center Pool this season, fell to CWPA Southern Division rival Maryland, 9-3, Wednesday evening.
GW (4-9, 0-1 CWPA Southern Division) senior goalkeeper Julie Jacoby continued her outstanding play in net, making 14 saves, but the Colonials' offense was stagnant in falling behind 4-0 after two quarters.
Maryland's (12-6, 1-0) Rachel Jordan and Shannon Simmerly scored first-quarter goals, while Blaise Stanicic and Allison Beck added goals in the second quarter to push out to a 4-0 lead after 16 minutes.
The Colonials got on the board just over a minute and a half into the third quarter on sophomore Marissa Stamler's ninth goal of the season.
Simmerly answered with her second goal of the game with 1:56 left in the period, but GW's Amy Moren scored on a pass from Stamler 31 seconds later to close to 6-2. However, the Terrapins' Jessica Ernst retaliated 43 seconds later to close the quarter at 6-2.
Junior Luciana Maggiolo once again got GW within three goals at 6-3 with a man-up goal with 6:25 to play. The Colonials wouldn't score again as UM's Christen Vagts, Casey Mills and Maggie Eicks netted goals in the final five minutes to produce the 9-3 margin.
Senior Sarah Stimson posted four steals to lead GW, which travels to California for a series of games March 15-18. The Colonials begin Spring Break at the Claremont Convergence in Claremont, CA, this Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16.
