CLAREMONT, CA - The George Washington women's water polo team defeated Occidental and Macalaster on the final day of the Claremont Convergence Sunday to finish 3-1 at the event.
GW improved to 7-9 on the season, topping its six-win total from 2007.
GW eased past Occidental, 8-7, in a game in which the Colonials led by four goals in the fourth quarter. Junior Amy Moren had four goals and senior Julie Jacoby posted 17 saves to lead the Colonials. Sophomore Marissa Stamler chipped in three goals.
The Colonials trounced Macalester, 18-6, in Sunday's final game, using a 7-2 second-quarter run to blow open the contest. Stamler and sophomore Bernadette Karandy each scored four goals, followed by a hat trick from junior Luciana Maggiolo. Freshman Charlotte Schou got her second win of the tournament by stopping seven shots.
In Saturday's late game, GW fell to Whittier 6-5. The Colonials trailed 4-1 after three quarters and had their rally attempt fall short. Senior Rebecca Stein had two goals, while Stamler, Karandy and sophomore Emily Chereson tallied one apiece. Jacoby had nine saves.
GW concludes its Spring Break trip Tuesday in Redlands, CA, with games against Marish and the host Redlands Bulldogs.
