Women's Water Polo Edged by Princeton, 10-6, in Home Finale

April 13, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's water polo team tied the game early in the fourth quarter, but Princeton rolled off four unanswered goals to fend off the upset-minded Colonials, 10-6, in the regular-season finale for both teams at Charles E. Smith Center Pool Sunday.

GW (7-18, 0-6 CWPA Southern Division) took a 5-4 lead into halftime on senior Greta Pedraza's goal with four seconds left in the second quarter.

Princeton (16-10, 4-2) netted the only two goals of the third quarter to take a 6-5 lead into the final period. GW knotted the game at 6-6 with 6:56 to play, but sophomore Marissa Stamler drew a game misconduct ejection midway through the quarter and the Tigers immediately capitalized, tallying four goals in the final four minutes for the victory.

Stamler and junior Amy Moren led the Colonials with two goals apiece, followed by one goal from Pedraza and sophomore Danielle Mayer. Senior Julie Jacoby made 15 saves. It was the final home game for Pedraza, Jacoby and seniors Sarah Stimson and Rebecca Stein.

Both GW and Princeton move on to the CWPA Southern Division Championships at Bucknell in Lewisburg, PA, Saturday, April 19. The Colonials are the No. 4 seed and face top-seeded Bucknell at 9:00 am. The championship and third-place games will be played Saturday evening.
