Spokane, Wash. - Ryan Wiegand recorded his team leading fifth home run of the season Sunday as the Gonzaga University baseball team fell victim to No. 17 University of San Diego 9-3 Sunday at Cunningham Stadium in San Diego. The game was the final game of the three-game West Coast Conference series.

Gonzaga (16-14, 1-4 WCC) starter AJ Proszek (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits over 6.0 innings. San Diego's (22-11, 4-2 WCC) Kyle Blair (3-3) earned the start and the victory for the Toreros as the freshman allowed three runs on five hits during 6.1 frames on the mound. Darrin Campbell earned his third save of the season for USD, throwing 2.1 innings of perfect ball.

Wiegand gave the Zags an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run home run that plated Marcus McKimmy, who had reached on a walk. San Diego responded with a run in the bottom of the first as Logan Gelbrich doubled down the left field line to score Josh Romanski.

The Toreros took the lead in the bottom of the second, 3-2, thanks to run-scoring hits by Kyle Muno and Romanski. Muno recorded a triple to score Nick McCoy, before scoring on a Romanski single. San Diego added an insurance run in its half of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Victory Sanchez.

Gonzaga narrowed USD's lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth as Wiegand, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored on a ground out by Grant Kveder.

San Diego rallied in the final two frames, scoring five runs to run away with the win. In the seventh, a two-run home run by Gelbrich highlighted a three-run inning, while in the eighth, Romanski and Josh Meador each recorded RBIs to cap the Toreros scoring.
 

 

Wiegand paced the Zags of the day, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Evan Wells, Drew Heid and Bryan Winston each also recorded hits on the afternoon.

The Bulldogs will return home to Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field to open a nine game home stand. The home stand will kick off Tuesday as they host Washington State University at 6:00 p.m.
