March 17, 2008

Spokane, Wash. - Grant Kveder of the Gonzaga University baseball team has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday.

Kveder enjoyed an outstanding week as the junior led the Bulldogs (10-7) to the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic title with a 4-2 tournament record. During the six-game event, Kveder hit at a .500 clip, going 10-for-20 with five runs scored, five runs batted in and two stolen bases. Friday, against New Mexico State University, Kveder went a perfect 5-for-5 in a 17-10 victory over the Aggies. For his efforts, the native of Lethbridge, Alberta was also named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

On the season, Kveder leads Gonzaga with a .382 average. The catcher, who was originally listed as an outfielder, has gone 21-for-55 with two doubles, 13 runs batted in and eight runs scored.

The honor is the first of Kveder's career, as well as the first weekly honor for a Zag this season.

Gonzaga will return to the field Monday when they host Utah Valley University in a three-game series at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
