Zags Fall To Broncos In Close 4-3 Match

Feb. 24, 2008

Santa Clara, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team suffered a close 4-3 loss to Santa Clara University Saturday at Santa Clara, Calif. The match was scheduled to be played outdoors but because of weather, was forced inside. Sunday, the Bulldogs were scheduled to play Saint Mary's College but the match has been cancelled due to poor weather.

The loss Saturday drops Gonzaga to 3-6 for the season, including 0-1 against West Coast Conference opponents.

Due to time constraints, singles matches were played first in attempt to establish a winner without the doubles point. Three Zags - Roman Dojcak, Cooper Fratt and Charles Adams, each earned victories in their respective matches. Dojcak, playing No. 2, defeated SCU's Steven Benevenuto 6-4, 6-4, while Fratt did not allow one point at No. 5 as he rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Chalie Burke. Playing No. 6, Adams earned a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Justin Wong.

The Broncos' Jay Wong, Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong and Senthil Chidambaram each recorded singles wins that would force doubles play. Wong earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stefan Feddersen at No. 1, while Hirakawa-Wong downed Zach Radetzky 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3. At No. 4, Chidambaram posted a three-set 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Conor Feeney.

The match was decided with the doubles point, as the Broncos sneaked past with two-of-three matches. Gonzaga earned a victory at the No. 3 spot as Feeney and Fratt defeated John Iwanksi and Justin Wong 8-5. Benevenuto and Jay Wong earned an 8-6 win at No. 1 over Feddersen and Radetzky while Chidambaram and Hirakawa-Wong defeated Adams and Dojcak 9-7 for the match winner.
