Gonzaga Bound Corey Wins Women's Amateur
June 26, 2008
SEQUIM, Wash. - Gonzaga University-bound Stephanie Corey of Burien shot a final-round 1-under par 72 Thursday for a 6-stroke victory in the 15th annual Washington State Golf Association Women's Amateur at Sunland Golf and Country Club. Corey overtook 36-hole leader and fellow Seattleite Leslie Folsom who shot a final-round 81 over the 6,072-yard, par 73 layout. Corey took advantage of the ideal conditions, shooting the low round of the championship, the only sub-par round of the week. Her spectacular day was highlighted by birdies on the 3rd, 12th and 15th holes, with the only blemishes on her scorecard being two bogeys on 11 and 14. Folsom fell back into a tie for the lead with Corey after she double-bogeyed the 4th hole, and Corey took it outright after Folsom bogeyed the 6th. Corey then pulled away, shooting a 36 on the back-nine to Folsom's 41, finishing six strokes ahead at 10-over par 229. The graduate of Rainier Beach High School will ply her trade with the Bulldogs beginning in September. She finished second in the Washington State Class 3A Championship this past spring with a 36-hole total of 151, three strokes out of the lead.
