The GVSU men's tennis team earned a victory in its first match of the GLIAC Tournament on Saturday over Lake Superior State by a score of 5-0. Grand Valley is the #3 seed and advances to play #2-seeded Ferris State. The match will be played later in the day on Saturday. GVSU improves to 18-4 on the season, while LSSU ends their season at 8-12. The Lakers took all three doubles matches from Lake Superior State and needed just two singles wins to ensure the victory.
The duo of Tony Dang and Patryk Polus defeated Brandon Clayton and Robert Nelson by an 8-4 score in the No. 1 doubles slot. In No. 2 doubles, Patrick Troy and Renato Tamashiro also picked up an 8-4 victory. In No. 3 doubles, Alex Switzer and Matt Globerson found the win column with an 8-2 victory.
Philipp Claus recorded one of the necessary wins in singles play, as he defeated Nelson, 6-1, 6-1. The other victory went to Polus, as he downed Craig Bass by a 6-3, 6-4 count. The remaining matches were unfinished, as GVSU had already taken five points out of the possible nine.
The Lakers will play Ferris State for the second time this season. The Bulldogs got the best of GVSU on March 21, as they won in Grandville by a 6-3 count. Ferris State has gone 10-8 on the season, but finished second in the GLIAC with a 6-1 mark.
