Houston, Tx. - After the first day of the NCAA National Championships in Houston, Tx., Grand Valley State University's women's golf team is in sixth place. Ashley Smith is leading the Lakers, tied for eighth place overall with a two-over 74. GVSU is just one stroke back of fifth place and will resume play tomorrow morning.

Smith's 74 was the best round for a Laker on day one, followed by the four-over 76 shot by Caitlin Bennett. Bennett is in a tie for 16th place after the first day. Allie Tyler is eight over after round one, placing her in a tie for 34th place at 80. Tracey Puckering and Kristina Langton both shot 84s, tying them for 45th place.
