Mission, Kan. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America released its weekly poll on Tuesday, Sept. 25, and for the fourth week in a row, Grand Valley State University was at the top of the list. The Lakers have been ranked #1 since Sept. 4 and have compiled an 8-0-0 record on the year.
Aside from the overall top ranking, GVSU has high marks in many other categories. The Lakers are one of just three teams that have won all of their matches, along with Seattle Pacific (10-0-0) and Northern Kentucky (9-0-0). Grand Valley is third in the nation in both goals-against average (0.286) and shutout percentage (0.714). On the other side of the field, they rank fifth in scoring offense, scoring 3.86 goals per game.
The Lakers have two individual players that are at the top of their game, as well. Katy Tafler is third in the nation in both points per game (3.57) and goals per game (1.429). She is also 17th in the nation in assists per game (0.71). Tafler helped her numbers with a two assist, four point performance against St. Joe's on Tuesday, Sept. 25, just after the rankings were released.
Kristina Nasturzio has played well in goal all year long, ranking fourth in goals against average (0.155) and coming in sixth in save percentage (0.933).
The Lakers take to the road this weekend, travelling to Ohio to play Findlay and Ashland on Friday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 30. GVSU's next home game will be on Oct. 5 against Mercyhurst.
