Bay City, Mich. - Emily Berner scored her first goal of the year in Grand Valley State's regular season finale and was rewarded for her performance with the GLIAC Player of the Week award. Berner scored the goal and added an assist on Katy Tafler's single-season record 33rd goal of the year in a 5-0 win over Ferris State on Friday, Oct. 27. The #1 Lakers finished the season at 17-0 and host the GLIAC Tournament this Friday and Sunday.
Berner had a goal and an assist in the match, and was part of a strong defensive effort that limited the Bulldogs to just four shots. The Lakers outshot FSU 45-4. Three other Lakers (Tafler, Sue Christenson, Kristina Nasturzio) have also won GLIAC Player of the Week plaudits. The win extended GVSU's school-record winning streak to 17 matches.
The Lakers finished first in the GLIAC with an 8-0 record and were ranked first in the NCAA regional polls and the NSCAA national polls. The Lakers have been ranked first in the nation for nine consecutive weeks and have been at the top of the region since the polls first came out on Oct. 10.
GVSU is hosting the GLIAC soccer tournament this weekend, starting on Friday. At 11 a.m., #2 Mercyhurst will take on #4 Saginaw Valley. Following that, #1 Grand Valley State will play #6 Northern Michigan. The championship match will be Sunday at 12 noon. All-GLIAC players will be announced between matches on Friday.
