Allendale, Mich. - After defeating Mercyhurst 4-0 in the GLIAC Championship, Grand Valley State University learned that it may see the Lakers again this Sunday. The NCAA announced the final regional standings, with GVSU remaining No. 1. The Lakers have held the top spot since the first regional rankings were released on Oct. 10. Mercyhurst and Quincy will travel to Allendale to play on Friday in the #4/#5 match, with the winner taking on the host Lakers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville is the other host school for the Great Lakes Regional Tournament. Drury and West Virginia Wesleyan will play in a first-round match, with the winner advancing to a match against SIUE on Sunday.
There are six rounds in the NCAA Tournament, with the first two held at two different sites in each region. Top-ranked GVSU and No. 2 SIUE both received byes in the first round due to their high seeding. The winners at both sites will move on to a site from the Central Region for the third and fourth round matches, and the winner from that site advances to the finals, held in Orange Beach, Fla.
Grand Valley State boasts a perfect 19-0 record heading into NCAA tournament play, and has not lost in Allendale since the 2005 season. While GVSU has not played Quincy this season, the Lakers have defeated Mercyhurst on two separate occasions, both by final scores of 4-0.
