Mankato, Minn. - After advancing past Mercyhurst in penalty kicks, Grand Valley State University will play Drury in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The #1 Lakers played MC to a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes of action and advanced 3-0 in the penalty kick session. GVSU will play Drury on Friday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. in Mankato, Minn. with the winner advancing to the fourth round on Sunday at 1 p.m. All times are central time.
While GVSU is the top seed in the Great Laker region and the No. 1 seed in the nation, hosting duties rotate between the Central and Great Lakes region, with the Central hosting this year. Therefore, the Great Lakes Regional Championship between GVSU and DU is being played in Mankato, Minn. on the campus of Minnesota State-Mankato, the No. 1 seed in the Central region. MSU will play Nebraska-Omaha in the Central Region Championship on Friday, Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m. The winner will take on the winner of the Grand Valley/Drury match.
In Sunday's matches, Grand Valley State got a goal from Ashley Elsass and five saves from Kristina Nasturzio in 110 minutes of action as the Lakers played Mercyhurst to a 1-1 tie. Katy Tafler, Joyce Rose and Emily Berner all made their penalty kick attempts, while Nasturzio did not allow a goal in three attempts as GVSU pushed on to the third round. Drury, meanwhile, defeated the No. 2 seed in the region, SIU-Edwardsville, by a final score of 3-0.
