Ocoee, Fla. - Grand Valley State University split a pair of games with Winona State on Monday. The No. 13 Lakers powered past the Warriors in game one with a 10-6 victory and then dropped a 3-2 decision in game two. GVSU held a 2-0 lead in the second game before losing the lead late. Elizabeth Smith tallied a team-high four runs batted in over the two-game span. The Lakers return to the field in Ocoee, Fla. tolmorrow at 11 a.m. against Lake Superior State and then against Assumption at 1 p.m.
In the first game of the double-header, Lauren Rohan picked up the victory for GVSU, going 5.1 innings on the mound and giving up eight hits while striking out two batters. Smith went 2-5 at the plate with three RBIs and Sarah Holland went 2-3 with one run and two RBIs. The Lakers totalled 10 runs on 11 hits with one error, while Winona State scored six runs with 12 hits and one error.
Grand Valley jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against the Warriors when Smith doubled through the left side to bring home Nichole Woityra. Rebecca Plummer walked later in the inning to bring home Kristin Moleski. The Warriors scored three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to go up 3-2. GVSU came up big in the top of the third, scoring six to take the lead permanently. After Lisa Preuss doubled and Plummer singled her to third, Becky Rudenga singled to right field to score Preuss. Karen Walters then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Plummer. A single by Holland sent both Walters and Rudenga home to put GVSU up 6-3. Later in the inning, Smith picked up two more RBIs with a single up the middle.

In game two, Lori Andjelich, now 1-1, pitched six innings and gave up five hits and three runs while striking out seven in the loss. The Lakers tallied two runs on seven hits with one error, while Winona State scored three runs with five hits with two errors. Smith picked up another RBI, going 1-3. Woityra went 2-4 with one run scored in the game.
Grand Valley State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring runs in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the second, Stephanee Schrader reached on an error and Plummer scored unearned on the throw. In the third, Woityra doubled to left field and then Smith singled to right field to bring her home. The Warriors tied it up in the top of the fifth with two runs and then took the lead in the fifth with the last run of the day. Holland reached second in the bottom of the seventh, but was caught stealing third to end the game with Grand Valley trailing 3-2.
