Midland, Mich. - Grand Valley State University split a double-header with Northwood on Sunday, April 6, moving their record to 21-8 (6-2 GLIAC) on the season. The No. 9 Lakers took the first game by a final score of 4-2 before dropping the second game of the twinbill by the same score. GVSU will retake the field Thursday, April 10 against Cornerstone in Grand Rapids, Mich.
In the first game of the day, GVSU scored four runs on eight hits, while Lori Andjelich (9-4) picked up the win by going six innings. She gave up two runs on seven hits, striking out eight. Stephanie Cole picked up her second save of the season by pitching a perfect seventh inning. Sarah Holland went 2-4 at the plate, scoring two runs to help the Laker offense.
Grand Valley State started strong, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Holland singled to center field to start the inning and then scored when Kristin Moleski doubled to right-center field. Rebecca Plummer singled later in the inning to plate Moleski and make the score 2-0 in favor of the Lakers.
Holland scored again in the third after she led off with a triple down the right field line. Nichole Woityra singled to left field in the next at-bat to make it 3-0. GVSU scored their fourth and final run in the fourth inning when Lisa Preuss homered to left-center. The 4-0 lead held up, as Northwood managed just two runs down the stretch to make the final score 4-2.
In the second game, the Lakers scored two runs on eight hits and one Timberwolf error. Cole (9-3) was the pitcher of record, giving up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Holland played well again, going 1-4 with her second home run of the season.
