Big Rapids, Mich. - Grand Valley State dropped a double-header against western Michigan rival Ferris State University on Wednesday, April 16. The Bulldogs defeated the No. 15 Lakers 2-1 in game one and took a 1-0 shutout victory in the second game of the twinbill. GVSU is now 21-10 (6-4 GLIAC) on the season, and will return to the field tomorrow against Findlay in Findlay, Ohio.
Lori Andjelich took the loss in game one, moving her record to 9-5 on the season. She threw six innings and gave up seven hits and two runs while striking out one and walking three. The Lakers, meanwhile, scored one run on seven hits. Elizabeth Smith was 1-3 and batted in the Lakers' only run of the day.
The Lakers started strong, with Sarah Holland singling through the right side in the top of the first inning. Nichole Woityra singled through the left side to send Holland to second with no outs. A third-straight single, this one by Kristin Moleski, loaded the bases. Smith singled to the shortstop, scoring Holland and keeping the bases loaded. A fielder's choice, a strike out and a ground out closed the inning and left the bases loaded for the Lakers.
Ferris State did their damage in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs. After a lead-off single was negated by a double play, two doubles and a single led to two two-out runs for FSU, along with a 2-1 lead that they never relinquished.
In game two, Stephanie Cole (9-4) picked up the tough-luck loss, throwing seven strong innings and giving up just three hits and one run while striking out five. The Lakers couldn't plate any runs, although they did record three hits, including doubles by Smith and Moleski.
